I am always interested in what all the codes are for special versions or models of cars. Most of the codes refer to performance packages on muscle cars like a Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Camaro and in this case a Ford Mustang. The “K Code” is a reference to a 289 CI / 270 HP V8 engine. This engine is sometimes referred to as a “Hi-Po”. Standard Mustang engine was a 260CI / 210HP listed as a D Code.

What you get with the K Code Option

The K code package was first available in June 1964 and was actually a 1965 model. Along with the upgraded 289 engine, the K code also got an upgraded handling package and red stripe tires. All K Code Mustangs also have a 9 Bolt differential. To verify if you have a Mustang with this option, you will have a “K” in the vehicle identification number (VIN).

How to identify a K Code engine.

There are very few Mustangs with this K code option. It is suggested that Ford manufactured 1.7 million Mustangs and about 1% had the K code engine. This option lasted for 3 years and was not available after the 1967 model year.
